Private Networks

Factory Automation

Manufacturing enterprises are transitioning to factory automation to enhance production, boost efficiency, and reduce costs. A fast and reliable data network is a critical enabler, minimizing connectivity disruptions that can halt production lines and lead to substantial financial losses.

While wired LANs and Wi-Fi have long been the standard for such data networks, LANs lack the flexibility and agility needed for modern operations, while Wi-Fi struggles with performance, reliability, and security. The advent of 5G marks a new era in data connectivity, with enhanced cell coverage, high throughput, low latency, full mobility and carrier-grade security.

5G-powered private networks support Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) as they navigate the factory floor, PLCs and precision machine tools controlled via server-based MES systems, live video streaming for anomaly detection, and other use cases. As well, and crucially, with 5G embedded in the enterprise’s network, IT managers continue to have total control at all network ingress and egress points.

Mining

Coal, metal and other mines are often located in remote areas with poor public mobile network coverage; have security, fire and safety challenges; and are difficult to wire for IT and telecom needs. A typical open-pit mine may cover an area of 20 Km2, with a depth of about 500 m. Underground mines often extend 500 m to 1 km deep or span several kilometres horizontally, requiring complex leaky feeder systems to maintain reliable wireless coverage.

To address these comprehensively and cost-effectively, mining ministries and corporations worldwide are embracing 5G-based private networks, for its benefits of better interference protection, mobility, high throughput and low latency and jitter.

5G can transform mining operations from reactive, manual processes to fully digital, automated, and data-driven systems, significantly enhancing operations efficiency and safety. Use cases include:

  • Remote monitoring of daily progress, compliance and safety
  • Thermal imaging for early fire detection
  • CCTV and 5G-enabled drone surveillance
  • AI-driven anomaly detection for early issue identification
  • Asset-tracking

Oil & Gas

Oil and gas companies operate in remote, harsh environments – offshore rigs, desert fields, and deep-drilling sites – where deploying traditional wired LANs is often slow and costly. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi struggles with coverage, interference, and signal degradation in these complex, metal-dense settings.

As well, electronic devices used in these  hazardous areas, both on-site and in downstream facilities like refineries, must be specially designed to prevent ignition of flammable gases or vapors.

To meet these demanding connectivity needs, organizations are turning to ATEX/PESO certified 5G private networks.

In addition to standard 5G benefits such as high throughputs, low latency and full mobility, ATEX/PESO certified radio units can operate safely in flammable and hazardous zones.

Use cases include controlling and monitoring OT machinery and processes to enhance operations efficiency and safety, for example:

  • Connecting IoT sensors from critical systems such as pressure gauges and gas detectors safely over 5G to command-and-control centers
  • Remote monitoring of SCADA systems and PLCs
  • Remote operation and control of industrial robots in hazardous or hard-to-reach environments
  • Predictive maintenance

Ports

Port operations rely on robust data connectivity to support quay crane coordination with incoming vessels, fleet management of trucks transporting containers from the dock to yards, container tracking in yards with handhelds, and perimeter video surveillance.

Wi-Fi is widely deployed across port terminals for this, despite its shortcomings of inconsistent performance under load, poor coverage range, and significant signal degradation due to physical obstructions such as stacked containers and cranes.

The advent of 5G gives port operators a powerful, future-ready connectivity alternative. 5G offers wider coverage enabled by higher transmit power, improved interference management, high throughput, low latency, full mobility, and carrier-grade security.

Together, these capabilities position 5G-based private networks as a transformative enabler for modern port operations, supporting automation, improved efficiencies, and enhanced safety.

As global trade volumes grow and ports face mounting pressure to streamline operations and reduce costs, 5G provides the scalable, reliable infrastructure essential for meeting these demands.

Railways

The railway industry is experiencing rapid transformation, phasing out outdated but mission-critical wireless connectivity systems in the US, replacing legacy GSM-R technology in Europe with FRMCS, and deploying high-speed mobile data solutions to support vital railway operations in India.
In the US, the new IEEE 802.16t (“dot16t”) has been accepted as the new standard for mission-critical railroad NGHE communications, replacing legacy telemetry systems.
In India, Indian Railways is running an LTE-R pilot deployment, with the goal of replacing aging low-bandwidth point solutions, across its 128,000 Route Kilometres. LTE-R and later FRMCS will provide high-speed connectivity to support the Kavach collision avoidance system; MCX communications; advanced signalling systems; and live surveillance camera feeds such as at railway crossings.
